4th September 2020
Dear Parents / carers
We have had a great time in Year 6 this week and have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming your children back into school. They have adapted to the new procedures and instructions sensibly and maturely.
We thought it would be useful to provide you with some practical information about the weeks and months ahead.
Our P.E sessions will be on Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons. However, please can you ensure that your child has their P.E kit in school every day so we can take opportunities for additional activities if and when they arise.
Creative Curriculum – Hola Mexico
This half term we will be exploring Mexico. We have already tested, described and compared Mexican drinks and used this to help us design our own. In Geography, we will learn about longitude and latitude, the equator, hemispheres and time zones and use our geographical knowledge to compare Mexico and England. We will research different aspects of Mayan civilisation and explore the work of the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. Finally, we will learn about the Mexican festival, Day of the Dead and have our own celebration.
Homework will be set every Thursday and will usually consist of an activity on My Maths and Purple Mash. Children will have their logins for these in their planners. Homework should be completed by the following Friday.
Weekly spellings will be taught on a Monday then available to learn on the website, Spelling Frame (www.spellingframe.co.uk), where there are also games and practise tests to help with revision. There will then be a spelling test in class the following Monday afternoon.
We really want our Year 6’s to continue to develop a love of reading and over the last few years have built up a range of good quality, age appropriate books for them to borrow. Our expectation is that children will read a minimum of three times a week and record what they have read, and detailed comments about it, in their school planner. Please could you ensure that you sign your child’s planner at the end of every week as they will be checked and reads counted on a Monday morning,
We are very excited about the year ahead and hope the children are too.
