2nd November 2020
Dear Parents / carers
We are entering the second half of the Autumn Term in Year 6 and are looking forwards to what it holds.
We thought it would be beneficial to remind you of some information about the weeks and months ahead.
Our P.E sessions will continue to be on Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons. However, please can you ensure that your child has their P.E kit in school every day so we can take opportunities for additional activities if and when they arise. Also, as the weather is changing, could all children make sure they have a plain (dark) outdoor kit with a spare pair of trainers, just incase we get the opportunity to get outside.
Creative Curriculum – Fallen Fields
This half term we will be exploring World War One and are really looking forward to our workshop on 5th November. For this topic, we will be learning about the causes of The Great War, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, what life was like in the trenches and trench warfare. The children will get the opportunity to create some blackout poetry and WW1 weapons Top Trumps cards.
Homework will be set every Thursday and will usually consist of activities on SATs Companion and Purple Mash. Children will have their logins for these in their planners. Homework should be completed by the following Friday. We ask that all children attempt to achieve a score of 75% or above. Please check the Year 6 page each Friday for updates on the homework that has been set for that week.
Weekly spellings will be taught on a Monday then available to learn on the website, Spelling Frame (www.spellingframe.co.uk), where there are also games and practise tests to help with revision. There will then be a spelling test in class the following Monday afternoon.
We really want our Year 6’s to continue to develop a love of reading and over the last few years have built up a range of good quality, age appropriate books for them to borrow. Our expectation is that children will read a minimum of three times a week and record what they have read, and detailed comments about it, in their school planner. Please could you ensure that your child writes two quality comments in their planner and you sign your child’s planner at the end of every week as they will be checked and reads counted on a Monday morning.
Please could we remind you how important it is for children to be fluent with their times tables as this really helps them with many areas of maths. Times Table Rockstars is a fantastic resource that helps children to build their speed and stamina with their tables.
We continue to be excited about the year ahead and hope the children are too.
